In 893 AD, the first Slavic University was founded by a much respected clergyman of that age called Bishop Kliment. He was the disciple of St Cyril and St Methodius, two brothers from Thessalonica who became missionaries of Christianity for the Slavs. After the Byzantine conquered the city in 1018, Ohrid became the episcopal centre of Macedonia. Originally known as Lichnidos, the Old Town of Ohrid consisted of the settlement and the lake. The old part of the town was built between the 7th and the 19th century and has some of the oldest Slav monasteries such as St. Pantelejmon and more than 800 icons painted in the Byzantine style.
